Finholt LUTs - Optimized For Naturalistic Rendition

$60.00

A LUT I’ve developed over a few years of testing. Finding the balance between authentic and creative, while being applicable to all shots.

I wanted a LUT I could use for everything, and since I mostly work in Davinci Wide Gamut / Davinci intermediate, the original design is for DWG.

However, due to many requests I’ve reverse engineered it to work in Rec709. There are some technical limitations of this, and the LUT is not as robust as its DWG counterpart.

What do the LUT consist of?

S curve contrast that leaves the middle gray point alone. The same goes for the split toning. Some cool shadows and slightly warmed highlights, but not very much, because warm highlights tend to mess with purple sunsets and snowy days. The contrast curve has a slightly raised blackpoint, giving the illusion of cleaner blacks. The highlights are compressed to fit the different contrast ratios of different cameras.

It has quite a bit of subtractive saturation, and a little bit of hue limiting. I squashed a bit of the very teal tones and the very red / purple tones to reduce digital looking skin tones that some cameras tend to provide after conversion (lumix, blackmagic, DJI). The saturation levels are designed with skin tones in mind, but also naturalistic looking grass, sky, and shadows.

In general it’s an extremely ‘safe’ LUT, because I wanted it to be something I could use on all projects.

What do the last numbers mean?

The 65 / 33 numbers are how many points each cube has. You can use both in most cases, with the 65 version having more detailed steps between each point.

Where do I place the LUT?

Resolve: Place second last in the node chain, before the output display transform.

Premiere Pro: Use the Rec709 LUT on the creative LUT spot.

How should I grade with this LUT?

This is not a “set and forget” LUT. It needs exposure adjustment, white balance adjustment, contrast adjustments prior to the LUT. That’s because it’s a very broadly designed LUT.

In return, you can adjust this LUT to fit into any project, regardless of what you want.

What’s the input and output color space?

The DWG LUT inputs and outputs DWG / DI. (Use a CST from DWG to Rec709 after the LUT either in color management or as a node)

The Rec709 LUT inputs and outputs Rec709.
